Narina Trogon
Narina Trogon — Wilderness, Garden Route
After nearly three months of searching the dense coastal forests of Wilderness along South Africa's Garden Route, I was close to giving up on ever seeing the elusive Narina Trogon.
Countless early mornings and long walks through the forest had passed without a sighting. On this day, I sat quietly beside the river, mimicking the bird's soft hoot with my hands for nearly half an hour, hoping for a response.
Just as I decided it was time to leave, I gave one final call.
A flash of deep red moved through the forest. Moments later, the trogon appeared, landing on a branch only a few meters away in the most beautiful light imaginable. After months of searching for this extraordinary bird, he revealed himself for only a brief moment, a moment I will never forget.
